Book Description

Lt. Colonel Oliver North, USMC (Ret.) is the ultimate primary source: He has devoted more than forty years of his life to the United States military, was a member of the National Security Council staff and served as the U.S. government's counter-terrorism coordinator from 1983-1986. President Ronald Reagan described him as "an American hero."

Since the attack on September 11, 2001, North has been covering the soldiers, sailors, airmen, Guardsmen and Marines fighting the Global War on Terror for FOX News Channel. Now, in American Heroes, the New York Times best-selling author and host of War Stories offers an inspiring, first-hand account of the extraordinary men and women defending America against radical Islamic terror.

North and his award-winning War Stories documentary team have made a dozen extended trips to Afghanistan, Iraq and the Philippines to cover U.S. and allied military units and personnel for FOX News Channel. His extensive experience as a decorated military officer, counter-terrorism expert and documentary filmmaker embedded with American combat units gives him a unique perspective on the enemy we face and the qualities of those who have volunteered to protect us.

With more than 300 full-color images, American Heroes presents a no-holds-barred, close-up of this generation's "citizen soldiers" who have chosen the path of the patriot to go into harm's way.

North's unprecedented access, his grasp of history, and his lucid, firsthand reports from the crucible of combat make this a stirring chronicle of courage, commitment, compassion, and faith. Former Speaker of the U.S. House or Representatives and historian Newt Gingrich has described this work as a "treasure."

"This book is a tribute to the brave men and women I have covered in combat," North explains. "I have the best job in broadcasting. Those who fight America's wars are my beat. I hang around real heroes for a living... They wear flak jackets, flight suits, and combat boots.

"In the pages of American Heroes, you will meet the dedicated and selfless men and women I have encountered in the foothills of Afghanistan's Hindu Kush, the deserts of Iraq, on the waters of the Persian Gulf and in the jungles of the Philippines. This book will show you brave young Americans as they really are: all volunteers; part of the brightest, best educated, trained, led, and equipped military any nation has ever had. Despite the way they are presented by too many in the press and politics, the men and women in uniform today are overwhelming good. I'm proud of them. You should be, too."
