Book Description

Author Eric Naegler helped and advocated for his parents during their last years. As a result, he began Assisting Aging Parents, a company to help others with their aging parents. In "Think Ahead of Disaster", a guide for assisting aging parents, Eric shares his emotion filled experiences along with tips and suggestions for helping elders safely age in their own homes. It is kinder, easier, and cheaper to prevent accidents or prepare for their needs than to send our seniors to nursing homes. "We simply are not prepared for the decline and needs of our aging parents," said Naegler. Eric's reflections on the struggles to honor his parents "end of life" wishes reveal the difficulties many in the "sandwich generation" face in struggling with career demands, the needs of children and other family members, senior services, and the medical community. NO WONDER WE ARE OVERWHELMED! This book is recommended for anyone struggling with aging issues, be it adult children or those of us who want to live out our lives independently and with dignity in OUR HOMES- NOT NURSING HOMES.

Some areas covered in this book are:
  • Senior home safety
  • Eleven signs your aging parents may need help
  • Realistically assessing your parents' abilities
  • Don't take away their drivers license, take away their need to drive
  • Can you keep your parents at home?
  • Developing a care plan and allowing it to work
  • If all else fails, choosing alternative living or a nursing home
  • Avoiding an end of life crisis
  • Grieving
  • Faith and Spirituality
  • Suggestions for changing the elder care model for the future
Naegler's book is based on personal experiences with his parents as well as lessons he has learned from his clients. It contains tips, suggestions, and actions to take. Often, with help, a senior can remain home far more economically, while easing the burdens on family and maintaining a better quality of life. Naegler has delivered multiple presentations and begins each with the question, "How many of you want to spend the end of your life in a nursing home?" To date, no on has answered "yes." Unfortunately, some seniors end up in the nursing home because of accidents, poor nutrition, or confusion, which could be prevented, with a little help.
