Book Description

In his first book It's So Much Work to Be Your Friend, educator Richard Lavoie broke new ground regarding the social challenges faced by children with learning disabilities. Now, in his new book THE MOTIVATION BREAKTHROUGH: 6 Secrets to Turning On the Tuned-Out Child, Lavoie tackles an issue that frustrates and puzzles many parents, teachers, and coaches: child motivation.

Motivation is the key to learning, but unfortunately few parents or teachers have an effective arsenal of techniques at their disposal. In THE MOTIVATION BREAKTHROUGH, Lavoie explores the reasons why many children are perceived as lazy, passive, and resistant to learning and offers answers that challenge common assumptions. The book provides information and instruments that parents and teachers can use to identify the motivational profile of any child. Lavoie then presents teaching secrets - which he calls "The 6 P's of Motivation" - and shows how these strategies can be combined and used for each type of child.

Whether its praise or power, projects or prizes, Lavoie explores each motivational type and presents proven techniques that can be used in school or at home. THE MOTIVATION BREAKTHROUGH also includes specific advice to parents and teachers of children with learning disabilities and provides detailed instructions on how to create a motivating and motivated classroom.

In an innovative chapter, Lavoie explores and explains the extensive research conducted by advertisers and marketers aimed at determining the approaches and techniques that motivate and inspire children. He translates this research into effective teaching techniques that can be used at home or in the classroom.

An in-depth exploration of external and internal forces that motivate school-aged children, THE MOTIVATION BREAKTHROUGH is a great resource for frustrated parents and professionals. Lavoie offers proven methods for improving a child's performance, productivity, and progress in school while fostering the perseverance, initiative, and commitment that will bring them success and satisfaction throughout their lives.
