Book Description
Wrinkles are badges of happiness!
Grandfather's Wrinkles opens as Lucy climbs onto
her grandfather's lap on a brilliant autumn day. She
stares inquisitively at his creased face and asks, "Why
doesn't your skin fit you anymore, Granddad? It's all
crinkly!" Granddad laughs and replies, "Those
crinkles are called wrinkles. Whenever I smiled an
especially big smile, I got a wrinkle to show for it."
As Lucy's pudgy fingers trace each furrow,
Granddad recounts the joyous events that caused that particular wrinkle. His memories are
shared in stunningly realistic paintings on alternating, wordless spreads: his wedding day; the
birth of his daughter, Lucy's mom; her childhood antics; her wedding day; and the cause of his
newest, deepest and most important wrinkles - the day that Lucy herself was born.
In the tender final scene of this gorgeous intergenerational story, Lucy's and Granddad's
heads are just touching. Granddad's papery skin is a striking contrast to Lucy's velvet-soft face,
and the pair's heartfelt bond expresses itself in a big, shared grin.
